Dealing with Dota 2 Lag Spikes
Game SettingsWhile Dota 2 is commonly thought to be able to run on just about any computer, it never hurts to double check your stats against the game's system requirements. It's also always a good practice to keep your graphics drivers up to date. If it's been a while since you updated, head over to AMD, Nvidia or Intel's website to download the latest driver for your card.
Once you've done this, it's time to take a look at the in-game video settings and see where you can optimize to save FPS and lag. Start by reducing the Game Screen Render Quality by about 10% and switching Shadow and Texture Quality to medium. You can also increase performance by toggling off the following rendering settings: Ambient Occlusion, Ambient Creatures, Atmospheric Fog, High Quality Water, World Lighting, Shadows and Ambient Cloth Simulation. These settings add very little positive impact to the visuals of the game and can collectively save you significant FPS.
If the quality of your internet isn't great, changing the Network Quality in the Advanced Options in game to "low" is an easy Dota 2 lag fix because it forces the game to only send 20 packets per second rather than 40 packets per second on "high." You should also reduce your internet usage while playing by stopping any streaming services and large file downloads. If you play Dota 2 on a laptop, you should opt for plugging in to your router with an Ethernet cable instead of using Wifi to improve performance. When firing up a match, make sure to only choose the 3 regions closest to you that have the lowest ping.

If you want the lowest possible Dota 2 ping, it's time to try out Outfox. The Outfox optimized gaming network will bypass network congestion that causes lag. Our servers connect directly to the game servers, reducing Dota 2 latency by providing the fastest delivery of traffic. And with the Fastest Server option, it's very easy to set up. Just fire up Outfox, select Fastest Server, and we'll automatically pick the route that gives you the lowest ping.
Next time you are experiencing frustrating lag or ping fluctuation, take a moment to make these easy adjustments and you'll be on your way to victory!
